Nunavut News was on scene at Four Corners in Iqaluit at approximately 2:25 p.m. on Tuesday when a man was arrested beside the Service Canada building after attempting to flee.
The sound of screams could be heard across from the Royal Bank. Two young girls had flagged down a police vehicle and sent officers in pursuit of a suspect they identified as allegedly being responsible for stabbing an 11-year-old boy in the chest the night before in the city’s downtown. The suspect’s escape route on the other side of the Service Canada building was blocked by several bystanders who wouldn’t let him pass.
The sister of the victim, while clutching her friend in tears, said that her brother was on his way to visit at a friend’s house the previous night when the alleged assailant stopped him, asked him for cannabis, and then allegedly stabbed him.
The boy was taken to the hospital to be treated for a stab wound near his heart.
The boy’s father, who was on scene and present when police apprehended the suspect, then took his daughter and her friend back to the hospital.
The RCMP did not immediately respond to a request for additional details from Nunavut News.
