Karah Kushnir, the founder of the Wellness Centre in Kimmirut, received $5,000 in funds last Thursday from the Department of Justice through the Ikajuqtigiiniq project.
"I feel there's finally real action towards supporting the youth in town," said Kushnir, adding "I'm really excited for the youth.
Last November, since the program started it has become "very popular," according to the elementary school teacher. There is an average of 20 kids a night showing up, she said.
With the funds, Kushnir has already bought video games, board games, movies, a laptop and even a new television for the youth.
Kushnir is now hoping to hire two staff members in order to offer the drop-in program three times a week.
The goal is provide the service every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. Presently, the drop-in is held once a week on Tuesdays between 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
"It's such a great boost towards positive growth," said Kushir, referring to the services provided for the youth.
