The Hamlet of Baker Lake held a special coffee, tea and bannock, with games and a square dance on Friday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m., to celebrate Baker Lake and the Baker Lake search and rescue team.
The search for John Utalaaq Oklaga of Baker Lake ended successfully when he was found at about 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27. Oklaga was located about six kilometers northeast of his campsite.
His tent and all-terrain vehicle had been found north of Shultz Lake by Baker Lake search and rescue members on Sunday, Aug. 25.
Oklaga had been expected to return to the community on Sunday, Aug. 18.
Baker Lake Mayor Kevin Iksiktaaryuk said he decided to hold this event to thank the Baker Lake search and rescue team and everyone in the community who supported the search. Iksiktaaryuk said after such a tough time, it’s important for the community to come together, celebrate bringing Oklaga home safely, and show its gratitude to those who helped.
He said the community was filled with relief and happiness when Oklaga was found.
“Everyone felt a huge weight lifted, and it reminded us all how much we care for one another here in Baker Lake,” said Iksiktaaryuk. “Many experienced tears of joy.
“The community is incredibly proud and thankful for our SAR volunteers. They give so much of their time and energy to help others and their dedication truly reflects the strong spirit of Baker Lake.
“It’s not easy to stay confident as the days pass by in a search, but our community stays positive by supporting each other. We rely on hope and resilience. I’ve also witnessed small pep talks at our morning meetings from search and rescue leaders, which help boost morale and keep everyone motivated. Little acts of kindness and being there for each other really help us stay strong as the days go by.
“I’m incredibly proud of our SAR volunteers, their families, and the community at large for their strength and determination. They didn’t give up and, even after long hours, their commitment to the community is truly inspiring and we owe them a huge thank you.”
