Adults aren't the only ones getting caught up in the rising popularity of beading recently.
With students out of school for professional development days in Baker Lake this week, the hamlet decided to hold beading classes for those students interested.
Hamlet wellness co-ordinator Karen Yip said right now, there's a lot of beading being done due to the growing popularity of beaded earrings.
She said the hamlet wanted to give interested youth the opportunity to create their own.
“It's unfortunate that, as kids, almost everybody is creative, but, by the time we get a little bit older, we don't have as much opportunity to express ourselves,” said Yip.
“We were looking for kids aged 10 and up to take part in the program and show their creativity.”
Yip said it's surprising how many youth also know older music and how familiar they are with the tunes, considering they didn't grow up during that time.
She said the kids' familiarization with the music from the 1960s and '70s shows just how timeless the music from that era truly is.
“I think it's good to see the kids interested in both beading and music from that time period.
“We set our sights at 15 to 20 kids, at the most, being manageable for the beading program. That's quite a lot of people for one instructor.
“We always like to foster creativity with the kids. It's a part of wellness and, I think, artistic expression is not only therapeutic, but it's also necessary and beautiful.”
