Eight cadets from the 3055 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (RCACC) in Naujaat participated in the Northern Cadet Experience conducted at the Whitehorse Cadet Training Centre this summer.
The experience included approximately 100 cadets from Northern communities and afforded them the opportunity to participate in survival training, mountain biking, canoeing, marksmanship, biathlon, team building, orienteering and leadership activities.
The cadet program is open to all youth between the ages of 12-19 and provides them with opportunities to develop skills that will last a lifetime, including teamwork and communication.
Commanding Officer Capt. David Femiak said that weekly cadet training will resume on Sept. 24.
Femiak said he's looking forward to offering the 3055 RCACC Naujaat cadets the various aspects of the marksmanship program, which includes progressive training, the promotion of the safe and proficient use of air rifles and the development of youth coaches.
“I am a qualified range safety officer for the Daisy 853C air rifle within the cadet program and look forward to offering this training this year,” said Femiak.
He also said he's excited at the prospect of conducting a field-training exercise in April 2025, which will be the first time in five years the training has been offered to local cadets. The exercise may include tying knots and lashings, assembling a survival kit and following campsite routine.
“The cadets at 3055 RCACC really like the outdoors and marksmanship activities, so I'm happy this is something fun and exciting that I can bring to the community,” said Femiak.
