The family area that also plays host to summer camp activities fell victim to vandals in Arviat this past month.
Arviat Mayor Joe Savikataaq Jr. said the hamlet posted images of some of the damage to show people what others are doing and how it affects those who use the summer camp facilities.
He said he's not sure if the people causing the damage are after something or just causing damage for the sake of it.
“We have multiple buildings at the summer camp that have canoes, life jackets, and that kind of stuff in them,” said Savikataaq. “When this type of damage is done it affects everyone who uses the camp. There wasn't anything taken that I'm aware of, just the damage they caused.”
Savikataaq said, overall, the situation was quickly rectified and the damage repaired, but it's not nice having to put up with someone breaking in and causing damage.
He said if the culprits wanted to use anything that's in there, all they had to do is ask for permission.
“All we ask is don't break in. Just be honest, approach us and ask permission to use whatever and it will be no problem. Just ask us.
“There's always a reason for something, but I don't understand what's going on here. It's always upsetting when you see that because it's the town that's affected.
“You go there on any given day and there's always people at the camp. There's a little lake there with markers for where the deep end starts, so kids can't go past that. There's barbecue pits all over that area and there's a nice playground set up for kids of younger ages to be using.”
Savikataaq said the camp has been part of Arviat since the late Bob Leonard was with the community.
He said there's been no further incidents since the photos were published in July and, hopefully, it will stay that way.
“We try and do what we can to minimize these types of things.
“It's a popular family spot and a good asset to have for the community.
“We use it for the summer camp and the kids just love to go there and have a good time.
“There's a nice, big building there with bug screens and all that, so, if there's too many bugs out, the kids can go in there to do various activities that keep them occupied and entertained, while they learn a few things here and there. They really enjoy themselves there.”
