Players registered with minor hockey and participating with one of the Rankin Rock teams have joined players from across the Kivalliq region in increasing their fundraising efforts with a string of minor hockey tournaments looming on the horizon.
Rankin will host five minor hockey tournaments between Jan. 18 and March 17.
Annual JLM raffle sale
Arviat
The annual giant raffle held in support of the Jon Lindell Memorial (JLM) Calm Air Cup senior men's hockey championship has returned to Arviat with a top prize consisting of a pair of round-trip tickets to Winnipeg (donated by Calm Air), as well as two tickets to an NHL game on Feb. 16 pitting the Winnipeg Jets against the Ottawa Senators.
The NHL game tickets are donated by Jim Ramsay and Arctic Connection.
The lucky grand prize winner will also receive a bonus of an item autographed by Patrick Lalime.
Other prizes up for grabs in the raffle include a $250 gift card courtesy of Eskimo Point Lumber Supply and Home Hardware, a $100 gift card courtesy of Padlei Co-op and a $100 gift card from the Northern store.
In other ice news from the community, Arviat is also gearing-up to host the 2019 Nunavut Bantam Territorial Championship from March 15 to 17.
Drawing contest
Baker Lake
Community wellness funds are behind a tobacco drawing contest that will accept entries until Jan. 31.
Contest participants are asked to submit a drawing that depicts why smoking is bad for you.
The winner will receive a $100 gift card. The winning drawing will be announced on Feb. 4.

Volleyball success
Rankin Inlet
Shanti Dias, Amber Graham, Alyson McKay and Andrew Powell of Rankin Inlet have all been selected to represent the territory as part of Team Nunavut for the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games for indoor volleyball.
The selections were made and announced by Volleyball Nunavut earlier this month.
Volleyball Nunavut also announced that Robert Kabvitok of Rankin Inlet will be Team Nunavut's male head coach for both the 2019 Western Canada Games and the next edition of the Arctic Winter Games.
