Additional supplies of water have been flown into Iqaluit, several thousand liters in 4L containers have landed with the afternoon’s cargo flight.
Water distribution centres have been set up at the Arnaitok Arena (old arena) and the AWG Complex parking lot, from 3:30 to 8 p.m.
Residents will be provided with a maximum of four 4L jugs per household, these containers will be reusable and Iqalummuit are encouraged to keep them for future use.
“Thank you CGS (Community and Government Services) Government of Nunavut,” wrote Iqaluit mayor Kenny Bell.
The City of Iqaluit is currently investigating the source of fuels in the water and are investigating multiple entry points.
City councillor Kyle Sheppard said “while the cause of this current crisis is yet to be determined, climate change is likely the culprit. All of Iqaluit’s underground infrastructure was built in permafrost. Permafrost that has since receded leaving infrastructure in the active layer wreaking havoc.”
