Covid-19 cases continue to climb in the Kivalliq during Nunavut’s holiday outbreak.

According to the Government of Nunavut’s Facebook page, there were 10 active cases in Rankin Inlet as of Tuesday, Dec. 28.

Late Tuesday night, the Hamlet of Baker Lake also posted an “urgent update” confirming one new case in the community.

In it, Mayor Richard Aksawnee encouraged all residents to follow the directives published by the GN to attempt to control the spread of the virus.

“We are living in uncertain times now and more than ever we all need to work together to get through this,” wrote Aksawnee.

The hamlet council strongly encourages residents not to panic, but to remain vigilant and follow healthy hygiene habits like washing your face, cleaning surfaces, physical distancing and avoiding large gatherings or smaller ones in confined spaces.

It is not clear yet if any of the new cases are the Omicron variant, which is spreading rapidly in Canada and leading to record daily case counts in several provinces.

The territory as a whole is in the midst of a “circuit breaker” lockdown that bars residents from any gatherings and most public facilities.

More updates are expected in the coming days.
