Residents of Arctic Bay, Cambridge Bay, Grise Fiord, Kugluktuk, Pond Inlet and Resolute Bay may notice some military presence around their communities over the next month.

Joint Task Force North will carry out Operation Nanook-Nunakput 2021 from Aug. 12 to Sept. 12 in and around the aforementioned communities.

The operation will involve air, sea and ground activities that will begin with preparations and the deployment of equipment on Aug. 9.

The purpose of the operation in the Northwest Passage is to “enhance the security of Canadians and to build lines of communication and best practices with… regional and international partners,” according to Joint Task Force North.

An Aug. 6 news release includes commitments to minimize disruption to local residents, to adhere to health protection measures to reduce risk of exposure to COVID-19 and to minimize impacts on the environment.
