Aivilik MLA Solomon Malliki opened the fall sitting of the legislative assembly by pursuing a topic he’s asked about before: remote work opportunities with the government.

“There were no employment opportunities in both of the communities I represent,” he said through interpretation, referring to Naujaat and Coral Harbour.

He went on to note how students are pushed to finish high school and need job opportunities to make use of that education.

“The parents urge their children to make sure that they complete their education and then they enter the labour market,” said Malliki through interpretation. “There is absolutely nothing available work-wise. I think it would be appropriate for the government to look at this working at home. That’s why we urge our students to complete their education.”

Human Resources Minister Margaret Nakashuk said she acknowledges the issue very well.

“We always try to seek ways of how we can accommodate communities with positions opening,” she said through interpretation. “We constantly discuss these and this won’t stop.”
