Aglukkaq joins Agnico Eagle board of directors

Leona Aglukkaq

Mining company Agnico Eagle announced on Thursday that former Nunavut member of Parliament Leona Aglukkaq joined its board of directors as of March 11.

“We are pleased to welcome Leona to the board, and we are looking forward to working with her. Her skills and experience will be extremely valuable as we continue to build our business in Nunavut,” said Mr. James D. Nasso, Agnico Eagle's chairman of the board.

Aglukkaq was previously a director with TMAC Resources, which operated the Doris North gold mine on the Hope Bay property in the Kitikmeot, but that company was acquired by Agnico Eagle for $287 million earlier this year.

Aglukkaq, former federal minister of Health and Environment, was the first Inuk in Canadian history to be appointed to federal cabinet. She also served as chair of the Arctic Council from 2012-2015.

Agnico Eagle also has two operating gold mines in the Kivalliq region.
