Residents of Kimmirut went for a cool Polar Bear Dip sponsored by the Recreation Committee on Sept. 4.

All 25 who participated received an embroidered towel to mark the occasion.
“It was a fun day for everyone who attended and watched,” said the municipality’s senior administrative officer Kimberley Young.

Aviva Community submissions open for $1M in funding

The Aviva Community Fund is celebrating 10 years of giving by offering 160 prizes that add up to $1-million.

Applicants can submit their small ideas for 50 prizes of $10,000. The Small Ideas category is awarded to organizations that bring people in their community together.

The Big Ideas category offers three prizes of $100,000, awarded to organizations bringing their community together and having a long-lasting impact.

The submission deadline is Sept. 18.

Farmers market held in Iqaluit

The IqaluEAT Farmers’ Market will be held at the curling rink in Iqaluit on Saturday Sept. 22 at 1:30 p.m.

Fresh, cheap veggies will be on offer.

Participants can e-mail organizers at IqaluEAT@gmail.com to order $50 food baskets or to become a volunteer.

The event is cash only, and bringing your own bag is encouraged.

Looee Arreak announces six Nunavut tour dates

Award-winning Inuktitut singer-songwriter Looe Arreak is visiting six communities in Nunavut this fall.

Arreak hails from Pangnirtung, and her repertoire spans traditional and contemporary Inuit music, Gospel and choir.

She has performed across the Canadian Arctic, both solo and in a duet with James Arreak andher band and choir.

Arreak will perform in Rankin Inlet (Sept. 10), Baker Lake (Sept. 13), Chesterfield Inlet (Sept. 14), Arviat (Sept. 16), Igloolik (Sept. 21) and Arctic Bay (Oct. 2).

Arreak partnered with the Department of Health, Quality of Life, the Embrace Life

Council and six communities to present an Embrace Life Tour.

Arreak is often commissioned to teach Inuit youth in Nunavut communities, facilitating musical youth training and workshops through the Qaggiavutt Society.
