Blaze breaks out at Iqaluit Northmart

A fire broke out in the early hours at the Iqaluit Northmart location.

Firefighters continued to battle the blaze into the morning, with the City of Iqaluit coordinating efforts.

A fire broke out that the capital's Northmart in the early morning hours Nov. 8.

"The City has set-up a response and recovery command centre … and is working closely with the Government of Nunavut, retailers and other organizations in the city to assist in coordinating an emergency response and recovery effort to the fire this morning," stated communications manager Andrea Spitzer.

The Elders Home, located near the blaze, was evacuated, with elders temporarily relocated at the nearby Elder's Qammaq.

"The Red Cross is providing assistance to the elders, as well," stated Spitzer.

Spitzer also said stores have committed to increasing supplies.

Roads around the location of the fire were closed to residents. Nakasuk School was also closed.

The City of Iqaluit scheduled an update for 11:00 a.m. at city hall.
