A 34-year-old Iqaluit man has been charged with forcible confinement, assault, uttering threats, and violating court conditions following a 12-hour standoff with police on Wednesday.
The man barricaded himself in his home and refused to cooperate with the police, according to an RCMP news release issued early Thursday afternoon.
The Critical Incident Team was called upon to assist in the situation and the public was kept away from the 100-300 blocks of Nipisa Street for their safety. Schools were also alerted.
Three young children were safely placed in the custody of Child and Family Services after police negotiations with the accused finally concluded the situation.
Alcohol was a contributing factor in this event, the Mounties say.
The accused is scheduled to appear in the Nunavut Court of Justice on Thursday afternoon.
"We would like to thank the residents of Iqaluit for their patience while we worked through this event. We are pleased that the incident came to a peaceful resolution and no one was harmed." said RCMP Insp. Mark Crowther.
