February 19 – On-the-Land Contest

Winner: Lars Nielsen Qaqqaq
Baker Lake
I went caribou hunting west of Baker Lake in November with Susan Toolooktook. It was a warm day with flurries. We saw fresh wolf tracks and drove over a few more hills, stopping on the top of a hill and we saw a pack of four wolves.

One wolf was white and the rest were grey. After a few minutes we agreed to go after the wolves, which were walking slowly, probably after eating a good meal. Susan and I drove towards the wolves, and when I knew we were close I unhooked the kamutik from my machine. The white wolf went ran out of sight right away. Susan chased another grey wolf. I chased the biggest wolf close to the Thelon River. I attempted the first shot but the safety was on so I kept driving. I chased two wolves up to a rocky hill but had to turn away and lost them. My stomach sank. I thought I blew my first chance at getting a wolf. We also saw no signs of caribou that day besides a rutting bull. After circling the hill twice I found the tracks of the two wolves and found them again on a hill right beside the Thelon River. The smaller wolf ran right onto the Thelon River and the bigger wolf ran away from the river. I chased the wolf again up to a hill and fired one shot to take it down. I was very happy and yelled out in celebration. I had seen wolves a good number of times, mostly during the summer and early fall. I asked one of my best friends and he didn't believe that I caught my first wolf with one shot. It was a great day hunting with Susan and we each caught a wolf.
