Four ways for Nunavummiut to vote this federal election

With the federal elections less than two weeks away, Nunavummiut will have 4 ways to vote and online voting is not an option.

In the 2007 Elections Canada's plan considered testing online voting as part of a small pilot project, according to Marie-France Kenny, a Media Advisor at Elections Canada.

In our research and analysis and considerations of experiences in other jurisdictions, it became apparent that there are challenges related to the integrity, verifiability and secrecy of online voting. Since there did not seem to be a way at that time to address these challenges in the context of Canada’s federal electoral process, we set aside plans to seek approval from Parliament for a pilot,” remarked Kenny.

Nunavummiut will have the opportunity to vote in person at any Elections Canada office within Canada. In this case, voting must be completed any time before 6:00 p.m. (local time) on Oct. 15.

Alternatively, also on Oct. 15, citizens can vote by mail if they apply no later than 6 p.m. (Eastern time).

A third option is for individuals to vote is at an advance polling destination on Oct. 11, 12, 13 and 14.

Lastly, voters can vote on election day, Oct. 21, 2019 at a designated polling area.

The location of the polling place, for advanced and election day voting, can be found on the mailed voter information card as well as online at the Election Canada’s website.
