With the limit of 250 caribou now harvested, the Department of Environment announced Tuesday that the Baffin Island caribou hunt is immediately closed.
Continued hunting of caribou on the island would be a violation of the Nunavut Wildlife Act, which would spark an investigation and possible "enforcement action," according to the Government of Nunavut.
Any remaining tags are void and should be returned to the local wildlife office or hunters and trappers organization.
"The (total allowable harvest) was established to support the recovery of the Baffin Island caribou population, and is a critical piece in the co-management efforts to allow the herd to recover and provide harvesting opportunities for future generations," the GN stated in a Tuesday news release.
