Having mould removed from the Cambridge Bay arena in time to do some indoor skating this year is now essentially impossible.
It has taken longer than expected to get the request for proposals (RFP) advertised, Marla Limousin, Cambridge Bay’s senior administrative officer, acknowledged. When the RFP is posted there will be a two-week period for contractors to respond, so it now appears that work won’t begin sooner than early April. The arena normally closes for the season by mid- to late-April.
Meanwhile, the Hamlet of Cambridge Bay has been maintaining three outdoor rinks for residents and a fourth will be added for the Omingmak Frolics spring carnival, May 3-6, Limousin said.
The Hamlet refused to open the arena this year due to the growing presence of mould, which it deemed to be a possible health hazard.
