The quick action of Iqaluit firefighters ensured damage to a four-plex was contained to one unit Thursday evening.

"At 7 p.m. on August 15, the Iqaluit Fire Department responded to building 174, a four-plex, for a structure fire. Upon arrival the fire could be seen venting through the door and windows of the A unit," according to a City of Iqaluit news release.

"RCMP assisted with evacuation of the three remaining units while the Iqaluit Fire Department quickly knocked down the fire from the doorway and windows from the exterior."

Fourteen firefighters were on the scene.

"After initial knockdown of the fire, the fire department entered the unit to complete extinguishment. The residents were not home at the time of the fire. There were no injuries and the fire department completed … fire extinguishment within an hour," the city stated.

Municipal enforcement officers, along with RCMP, assisted at the scene and were thanked for their efforts.

"The Iqaluit Fire Department’s quick response prevented the fire from spreading to the other three units and the residents of the neighbouring units were able to return to their homes," stated the city. "The Canadian Red Cross provided assistance to those affected by the fire."
