Amittuq MLA Joelie Kaernerk says tenants in mouldy homes should be given a reduction in rent.

Kaernerk asked Housing Minister Patterk Netser in the legislative assembly on Thursday if that can be arranged. Netser pointed out that the Nunavut Housing Corporation already lowers rents for units that are in disrepair. He didn’t make any promises in regards to mould, but said rental practices will be examined.

“I was also a tenant at one time, though that was quite a while ago, and I feel for (renters) with our cost of living in Nunavut being extremely high,” Netser said. “It’s like when you have children and rent is really high. I would like to review this for tenants in our units. I will review how we can improve the units that are being rented that are too old or look at the rent scale and lower them.”

Kaernerk asked Netser when mould remediation work will be complete.

“It’s a safety issue, especially when they have children and they get rashes and it can
be passed on to another person. I would like this addressed for the tenants, whether have
a job or not,” said Kaernerk.

Netser replied, ” I cannot say exactly when the work will be done. It is only when we are informed of mould that we deal with it. In 2018-19, we spent $5 million on mould remediation. The work is ongoing as I stated earlier. As soon as we hear which units have mould, we start work on them right away.”

  1. I’ve been living in a appartment for 9 years and it’s moldy around windows and door. And the rent getting higher because I’m working. I tried to get to another house through health center and still not qualified. If you owe housing money you can’t move into another house. Please help me and my family.

  2. My mom lives in very old house too, its more then 25 yr old, lots need fix, also if the sewage don’t come , it overflows thru washing machine, our windows was replace but it still gets really freezing at the rooms. I really hope they’ll look into it

  3. If the rent doesn’t go by last year’s income, most of us wouldn’t be so behind on our rent bills. My husband worked for housing for 7 years and was always on time to pay our rent until he started working as a part time, we couldn’t catch up and the rent was still $1,500.00 a month for a year, now we’re behind.
Also, our bathroom doesn’t have heater and gets very cold during winter, our bathtub and toilet freeze everyday. We cannon move to other unit because we’re behind on the rent bill.

  4. Write rent reduction, why not fix mould crisis, housing KNOWS my rented apartment is filled with mould, I’ve called countless times about mould, windows can’t open, broken sewage pipe that sewage goes inside our home, STILL NOTHING IS BEING DONE. WHY NOT PAY SOMEONE WHOSE QUALIFIED TO FIX THOSE PROBLEMS CAUSE THE WORKERS ARENT QUALIFIED…………..
