News briefs: Developing hockey skills in Arviat, community consultations

A series of hockey camps were held in Arviat on Jan. 29 for various age groups in the community's minor hockey program.

The camps were facilitated by former junior and senior goalie Scott Forcand of Winnipeg.

Community consultations on Meadowbank tailings

Baker Lake:

Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. is inviting residents of the community of Baker Lake to a consultation meeting to present extension potential of the tailings storage facility at Meadowbank.

The consultation will be held in the Thelon Room of the Iglu Hotel on Thursday, Feb. 8, beginning at 7 p.m.

Everyone in the community is welcome to attend the meeting and ask any questions regarding the project.

Atom blast in Rankin

Rankin Inlet

A total of eight teams were set to compete for the annual Arctic Atoms championship in Rankin Inlet this past weekend.

The tournament was divided into two groups, with the North consisting of the Rock A, Novice Rock, Coral Harbour and Baker Lake squads, and the South featuring the Rock B, Rock Girls, Naujaat and Arviat.

Final results were not known as of press time.
