The number of candidates running for mayor and council has shrunk since the first round of nominations for the hamlet election in Kugluktuk.

In the Dec. 11 Kugluktuk municipal election that was terminated by Nunavut Languages Commissioner Helen Klengenberg due to a lack of Inuinnaqtun translation on official elections literature during the nomination period, there were four people vying for mayor and nine seeking one of four available council seats. Now there are three candidates for mayor and six running for council in the March 5 makeup election.

Incumbent Mayor Ryan Nivingalok is seeking a return to office. His two competitors are Phillip Evaglok and Valerie Miyok.

On the ballot for council are Larry Adjun, Miranda Atatahak, Robert Pihoak Ayalik, Douglas Klengenberg, Nadene McMenemy and Danny Zita.
