Nunavut police spending rises 14 per cent

RCMP operating expenditures rose by 14 per cent in 2018 compared to 2017, which was the biggest jump among all provincial and territorial police, according to Statistics Canada data released on Oct. 4.

The jurisdictions with the next largest year-over-year increases were British Columbia and Nova Scotia at 13 per cent. Nationally, operating expenditures rose two per cent, accounting for inflation. Salary, wages and benefits accounted for the bulk of operating expenses nationally, at 82 per cent.

Nunavut had 136 police officers serving a population of 38,400 residents in 2018, according to Statistics Canada. That rate of officers to civilians was down 0.7 per cent from the previous year, but the rate was only surpassed by the NWT in 2018, the data shows.
