Olayuk Akesuk was re-elected as vice-president of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association on Monday, but the vote totals were so close that a mandatory recount will be needed to verify his victory.
Akesuk earned 645 votes, unofficially, compared to 635 for Jerry Natanine. Jaco Newkingak, with 173 votes, and Cornelius K. Nutarak, with 142 votes, were also seeking the office.
Voter turnout was 14.3 per cent.
Levi Barnabas was successful in his bid to become secretary/treasurer with 714 votes. Johnny Mike, with 542 votes, and Enoki Irqittuq, with 317 votes, were the other candidates.
In Arctic Bay, Jeremy Tunraluk defeated Andrew Taqtu 64-19 to become community director.
The race in Grise Fiord was extremely close with Liza Ningiuk edging Larry Audlaluk 23-22.
In Kinngait, Mathew Saveakjuk Jaw prevailed over Adamie Nuna 57-54.
Charlie Qumuatuq is the new community director in Pangnirtung. He garnered 58 votes compared to 42 for Looee Mike and 36 for Peter Evvik.
In Qikiqtarjauq, Stevie Aulaqiaq eclipsed Harry Alookie 38-37 in a tightly-contested race. Jonah M. Audlakiak finished third with 31 votes.
Paul Amagoalik was acclaimed as community director in Resolute.
