One person taken to hospital following house fire in Iqaluit's Happy Valley

An occupant of a house that caught fire in Iqaluit's Happy Valley area was taken to Qikiqtani General Hospital as a precautionary measure on Monday morning, according to the City of Iqaluit.

Fourteen firefighters responded to the blaze shortly before 10 a.m. Upon arriving at the scene, they saw flames exiting from a window. Some of the fire crew made a quick entry into the home and were able to limit the fire to the room where it originated, the City of Iqaluit stated in a Tuesday news release.

The Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze.

Iqaluit Emergency Services reminds residents to ensure their smoke detectors are still working. It's also recommended that bedroom doors be closed while people are sleeping because the door can act as a barrier against smoke and fire long enough to allow individuals time to escape in an emergency.
