Police file charges in relation to Pangnirtung firearms incident

A 27-year-old Pangnirtung woman is facing charges after being accused of firing shots within the community on Monday evening.

Jessica Akpalialuk has been charged with recklessly discharging a firearm, unsafe storage of a firearm and other firearms-related offences, according to an RCMP news release issued Thursday afternoon.

Akpalialuk appeared before a justice of the peace and remains in jail until her next court appearance, scheduled for Nov. 5 in Iqaluit.

Upon being alerted to the incident on Monday evening, the police requested that residents remain in their homes for safety purposes. The Mounties offered their thanks to community members for their cooperation and patience.
