Qulliq Energy Corp applies to reduce customers’ bills

Qulliq Energy Corporation has applied to have power bills reduced — an amount that will save the average customer $14.50 per month.

The power corp. announced the application to the territory’s Utility Rates Review Council on Wednesday morning. QEC is seeking a reduction of 2.76 cents per kilowatt hour from April 1 to Sept. 30. This is because of the falling cost of fuel.

“The requested fuel rider refund is related to the decrease in territorial fuel prices announced in January,” said Jeannie Ehaloak, minister responsible for QEC. “Decreased fuel costs benefit customers by lowering electricity bills and putting money back in the hands of Nunavummiut.”

Customers who will see their bills drop $14.50 per month are those who use approximately 500 kilowatt hours per month. Public housing tenants won’t see a difference, however, because they are subsidized under Nunavut Housing Corporation’s program.
