Rankin Inlet RCMP charge man allegedly speeding on ATV after drinking

A 20-year-old Rankin Inlet man will be heading to court to answer to impaired driving related charges following an incident in the community on Saturday night.

The RCMP responded to a report of an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) driving at a high rate of speed, not stopping at stop signs and "driving recklessly" around town. In addition, there were reportedly three people on the machine, which exceeds the limit of two.

Police located the ATV and arrested a man they say was the driver after he allegedly failed a test involving a roadside screening device.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Rankin Inlet on Feb. 10, 2020.

"The Nunavut RCMP wish to remind the public of the dangers of impaired driving and the dire consequences that often result from operating a vehicle while impaired," the Mounties stated in a news release on Monday. "The public should take note that the National Impaired Enforcement Day is scheduled for December 7th and check stops will be conducted throughout the territory."
