RCMP draw link between young woman in medical distress and Arctic Bay drug crime

Arctic Bay RCMP filed drug charges against a 39-year-old Arctic Bay man after responding to a young woman who had fallen unconscious on Saturday.

The woman was taken to the Arctic Bay nursing station for treatment and was later medvaced out of the community for additional treatment. Police believe she ingested an unknown substance.

The RCMP’s investigation led to the arrest of Ivan Oyoukuluk. He’s facing charges including possession of illicit cannabis, possession for the purpose of trafficking and resisting arrest.  He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Arctic Bay on June 8.

The Mounties remind residents to always exercise caution when ingesting unknown drugs and consuming alcohol.

“Please be mindful of the harmful and often life-altering consequences they may cause through excessive use. The best advice is to never use unknown illicit drugs and consume alcohol in safe quantities,” states an RCMP news release issued Tuesday afternoon.
