SPORTS CHECK: Communities set for battle in Nunavut

The first big futsal tournament of the new season is on the horizon and it's happening in Iqaluit.

It's the U18 Nunavut Futsal Championships and it gets going on Nov. 2 at Inuksuk High School and Aqsarniit Middle School.

Dawn Currie, executive director of the Nunavut Soccer Association, said there will be action in both boys and girls divisions with eight teams in each division, pooled into two groups of four.

Several communities will be sending teams including Gjoa Haven, Rankin Inlet, Whale Cove, Kugluktuk, Coral Harbour, Arctic Bay, Pond Inlet, Iglulik and Arviat. All eight teams will advance to the playoffs with the winners being decided on Nov. 4 in the finals.

Blue Jays offer help

The Jays Care Foundation, the charitable arm of the Toronto Blue Jays, puts out a call every year for organizations to submit requests to help build and maintain play areas for youth.

The Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut (RPAN) is helping out with that call this year as it wants communities in the territory to think of ideas to put forward. Step one of the process is to fill out a form, which can be found on RPAN's website, which is the initial application. If the application passes stage one, it moves into stage two, which involves a more detailed application.

The deadline to get your initial form in is Oct. 31.

Ready to turn left

It's a new season for Nunavut Speed Skating and the upper groups are underway with their regular training.

The Level 6 through 11 skaters will be at Nanook School in Apex every Tuesday and Sunday for their dryland training sessions with the on-ice practices happening Thursdays and Saturdays at the Arctic Winter Games Arena.

Everything began on Oct. 25
