Taxi service returns to Iglulik

The business, which launched on Dec. 31, fills a void left since the last cab service shut down almost a year-and-a-half ago.

Owner Wayne Ungalaq said he's carrying on a family tradition, as his father ran a cab service in Iglulik 30 years ago.

Ungalaq does most of the driving but he has a friend who also helps out during the 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. operating hours.

"I'll start doing more hours once I start hiring more drivers. I'm still in the process of doing that," he said.

He has a contract with Baffinland Iron Mines to get mine employees to and from their flights. Other calls for airport service are gradually building up as well.

"Everybody was so used to getting free rides from their friends or family members, but it's starting to pick up a little bit," he said. "Not too bad. We've got busy days."
