The police have arrested two youth in connection to a spree of fires, including the Northmart blaze, that occurred Wednesday and Thursday in Iqaluit.
Criminal charges of arson and disregard for human life are pending.
In addition to the fire at the grocery store, four vehicle fires and a garbage fire at an uninhabited home were reported over a six-hour span. The Northmart fire forced the evacuation of nearby elders’ residences.
No injuries were caused by any of the incidents.
“We would like to thank the community for its patience despite the devastating loss,” said RCMP Insp. Mark Crowther, Qikiqtani district commander. “RCMP and fire personnel are working diligently to ensure public safety and bring those responsible to justice.”
The investigation into the fires is ongoing. The RCMP would like to remind the public to report any suspicious activities that they observe by contacting their local detachment or anonymous tips can be sent to Crime Stoppers by calling toll-free 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), or online at www.nwtnutips.com or by texting ‘NWTNUTIPS’ plus your message to 274637 (CRIMES).
