Welcome to Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. Now that summer is pretty well over, cooler weather has arrived and it sure feels like fall weather is already back. I heard it snowed in Gjoa Haven last week, so we know our first snowfall will be here soon enough.
Residents have been boating out to mainland, hunting for caribou and few berry pickers out there. For families it is such a good time of year to get away from town to go relax and enjoy the quiet and peace out there.
For some campers and hunters, it has been a waiting game, trying to return home by boat but the windy weather had them stay back waiting for calm waters. We hope everyone is safely home or have reached their destinations and little getaway during this pandemic.
Inuit have such knowledge of the weather and land and waters. When you go going on the land, don't travel alone, always let others know where you going and your plans on when you will return home back to town or to your cabins. An orange radio or in-reach GPS is the most handy equipment when heading out on the land, especially when trying to head to your destination or heading back to town. Be safe everyone.
Quana to all the hunters who have generously shared their harvest with family and the rest of the community. Our Elders are well looked after by our local hunters and trappers organizations. A big Quana to you all. Makes everyone happy.
School is starting up again. Both Kullik Ilihakvik and Kiilinik High Schools will be bustling with students and the halls of the quiet classrooms will once again come alive. Welcome back to each of you and to all our teachers and staff who will I am sure keep good protection of our kids from this Covid-19 that is happening all over the world. Be safe and always look out for each other.
