Welcoming warm spring weather is one of life’s dreams coming true if you live in Nunavut. For Inuit, it is one of the most favourite times of year. Many go camping, hunting and ice-fishing. Spending more time outdoors is so much fun after some cold winter season.

Look Mom! I found an Easter egg! Two-year-old Brynn Vandevalk, left, and 4-year-old Keeran Houben are egg hunting on the Arctic Ocean in Cambridge Bay, Sunday, April 4. Every year the communities up North celebrate spring with festivities, games, feasts, dances, snowmobile races, fashion shows, contests, fishing derbies, bingos, and much more for all families. But this year because of Covid-19 pandemic, we have had to limit all that with rules and restrictions to keep safe and practice social distancing. It is good that the communities are taking precautions to avoid the virus that is high risk.

So far Nunavunmiut are doing very well, but that does not mean we ignore the instructions from the chief public health officer. Please continue to be careful and safe.

Most families do head out to their camps where life is so much better and relaxing, peaceful and healing and healthy.

With this pandemic, there will be no feasts at the hall, no dances, no indoor events. But we can still enjoy what the frolics committee and volunteers are planning keeping safety first to avoid the virus. We hope everyone still enjoys the frolics this year and be thankful and happy we are doing very well.

Keep up the safety everyone in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. Congratulations to all our brave and strong youth and Elders and everyone for listening and following advice to stay well. Keep washing your hands and wear masks.

For us that are isolating before returning home, we are all well as can be, we are well taken care of.

Big smiles to our Arviat neighbours. You made us proud and let’s all stay well.

God Be With You Son. Forever and always in our hearts.
